They are giving their full-throated support for the much loved term after fellow brainiacs called for it to be scrapped.
The Institute of Physics fears it is seen as an "insult" and is putting youngsters off studying science.
But self-proclaimed boff Dr Chris Smith, a virologist at Cambridge University, says we shouldn't be "sanitising" language. The egghead who runs the Naked Scientists podcast, added: "I welcome coverage of science in any format. We can obsess about language - everyone is doing it at the moment. It's driving everyone nuts.
