THE resurrection of huge woolly mammoths is a major step closer.

Boffins have made the first 3D reconstruction of 52,000-year-old chromosomes from a "freeze-dried" carcass.

They say the "unprecedented" breakthrough was possible only because the beast had gone through the process shortly after it died in Siberia.
