The boy, 15, who cannot be named because of his age, indicated a not guilty plea at youth court to attempting to wound maths teacher Jamie Sansom with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article at Tewkesbury Academy, Glos, on Monday.
The boy, flanked by two specialist custody officers at Cheltenham magistrates court, confirmed his name, address and date of birth.
He was remanded in youth detention until July 21 when he will reappear for a pre-trial hearing.
The court was told that the trial in the youth court should be held before September 6 this year.
The alleged victim, Mr Sansom, 27, who has been a member of staff the school since 2017, was discharged from hospital on Monday allowed back to his Newport home.
He said: &ldquo;I am pleased to say that I am recovering well.&rdquo;
