FORMULA ONE is closing in on adding an 11th team to the grid after a breakthrough in talks with the Andretti-Cadillac project.

The Americans gained approval from motor sport's governing body, the FIA, last year to create a new team, but F1 bosses pulled up the drawbridge.

It is understood the involvement of Michael Andretti, who had angered many within the sport by calling them "greedy", was off-putting to chiefs.

But that barrier was removed when Andretti stepped down as head of his own racing team in September.

His replacement, Dan Towriss, is at the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend to continue negotiations with F1 and chiefs are now willing to open the doors to a General Motors works team.
