CHEESE prices have rocketed, shock figures reveal.
They soared by up to 41% last month after the cost of milk hit a record high.
The average price of cheese is 24% up on this time last year as farmers struggle with spiralling energy and feed rises.
The biggest recorded increase of any type was a 41% rise in the price of cambozola in Sainsbury's, according to research for The Grocer magazine.
A fifth of all cheese lines sold by the big seven supermarkets have seen prices explode.
Many own-label cheeses, which had previously escaped hikes due to price wars, are now 17% higher than a year ago, The Grocer claimed. The magazine urged cheese lovers to shop around for bargains.
A spokesman for Sainsbury's, which has a price-match policy with no-frills rival Aldi, said: "Customers can find low prices on the products they buy most often both in stores and online, including cheese." A Morrisons spokesman added: "This is an unprecedented period of inflation.
"We are working hard to keep prices down and competitive for our customers while maintaining high standards and availability in all our stores." &nbsp;&nbsp;
