A GIANT asteroid dubbed a “planet killer” is set for a close encounter with Earth today. The space rock – the size of a mountain – is set to whizz past our planet at a distance of just four million miles. Asteroid 2011 UL21 will be travelling at 58,000mph and is labelled “potentially hazardous”. Boffins say it will be the biggest to fly past Earth in over a century. The asteroid is thought to be between 1.1 and 2.4 miles wide, making it larger than 99% of near-Earth asteroids. If it shot massively off course and crashed into our planet it would cause enormous damage. Boffs reckon a collision would create huge amounts of dust and lead to major changes in the Earth’s atmosphere. This is what makes the space rock – which is five times the size of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs – a so-called planet killer. It will be the closest one has come to Earth for 110 years, reveal simulations by Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It is set to pass at around 17 times the distance that the Moon is to Earth. 2011 UL21 is expected to be at its brightest tomorrow and Saturday and will be visible in the northern hemisphere.
