CASES of the "100-Day Cough" have hit their highest level in a decade.
A total of 1,416 suspected infections of whooping cough have been confirmed by GPS across the country this year.
That's seven times higher than the 189 cases seen 10 years ago in the first five weeks of 2014.
The bacterial infection, which spreads easily and can cause a build-up of thick mucus and painful coughing fits, presents symptoms very similar to a common cold, which intensify over the course of a week.
Most sufferers can be treated with a course of with antibiotics.
Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, of the UK Health Security Agency, said: "Whooping cough affects all ages, but for unvaccinated babies and very young children, it can cause serious complications.
"It is vital that pregnant women get vaccinated to protect their babies from birth"
