Jacob Nathan, 22, was working on a school project when he found microbes can break down plastic litter.
The process creates new chemicals which can be recombined to make anything from clothes to flavourings.
Jacob, right, is now the CEO by of a multi-million pound firm. He said: "The potential application is using programmable biology to turn plastic waste into anything we could dream of." His early experiments yielded "promising" results,
which he emailed to family friend Professor Doug Kell, former chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
Jacob, from St John's Wood in north London, said: "He sent me thoughts on what needed doing and Bar how interested he'd be in taking things forward."
The pair went on to set up Epoch Biodesign, which now employs 21 people having raised &pound;13million in venture capital and nearly &pound;2m in government funding.
