With the world set to be faced with 80million tons of e-waste by 2030, scientists set out to discover how to salvage the important bits and safely ditch the rest. Now a team from Cornell University, in New York, US, has created a method that also converts the greenhouses gases that come out in the extraction process into useful organic materials. In tests it captured 99.9% of the gold while minimising the extraction of other metals. Researcher Amin Zadehnazari said: “It’s kind of a win-win for the environment.”
