TREASURY officials are pressuring NHS chiefs to water down plans to boost the number of doctors and nurses.
The bean counters are understood to want to axe targets to train a certain number of doctors and nurses over the next decade.
They want the NHS to give lower estimates of the numbers needed for the roles so the Government will not have to commit to higher spending. But NHS bosses want to put pressure on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt for a higher training budget. Senior doctors say it would be "deeply concerning" to backtrack.
A source said officials were "resistant to the idea of publishing something that commits them to spending beyond the next spending review".
But Hunt allies say he still believes "a workforce plan with no numbers is not worth the paper it is written on".
Shortages mean the NHS has a vacancy rate of 10% or 133,000 posts.
