A KILLER dog-ear fungus resistant to drugs could leap to humans, scientists fear.
Boffins have listed Candida auris as a "critical priority pathogen" as it is so potent and infectious it can cause persistent and severe infections and outbreaks in hospitals.
Dr Jianping Xu, at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, warned: "Even though C. auris was only found in stray dogs in this study, there are many stray dogs in many parts of the world.
"These dogs could act as transmission vehicles for C. auris to reach other animals and humans."
Antifungal medications are often powerless against the ultra-toxic fungus and it is estimated that more than one in three patients with serious, invasive infections will die.
The World Health Organisation has declared it one of the world's four "critical priority" fungal pathogens.
Dr Xu said: "We need to be vigilant in the surveillance of dogs, other domesticated pets and wild animals in regions where C. auris is endemic."
