PASSENGERS will no longer need to show their passports when arriving in the UK under radical plans.
New electronic gates at airports will instead use facial recognition to process people.
The plans aim to put Britain on a par with other countries including Australia.
Trials of the tech are set to start at airports this year. Phil Douglas, boss of the Border Force, said the aim was to use "much more frictionless facial recognition than currently".
Mr Douglas was "really impressed" by next-generation e-gates on a recent trip Down Under. He said: "I had to apply for an electronic travel authorisation in&nbsp;advance and used my smartphone to read the chip in my passport.
"That sent the image of me in the chip to the Australian authorities.
"When I arrived in Australia, I didn't even have to get my passport out of my bag. It is a really interesting concept." Dubai already allows facial recognition for 50 nationalities.
Britain is rolling out electronic travel authorisation for foreign arrivals.
The scheme is in force for Qataris and will extend to people from nations including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in February.
