BRITAIN'S bank has begged companies to stop increasing prices - or risk hurting those on the lowest incomes.
Andrew Bailey, left, the governor of the Bank of England, asked firms to remember that inflation is due to drop sharply later this year.
It has soared to 10.4%.
His plea came after the Bank raised interest rates to a 14-year high of 4.25% on Thursday. He warned if businesses raised prices to keep pace, the Bank would have to increase the base rate again.
Mr Bailey said: "It hurts people and particularly the least well off in society.
"If all prices try to beat inflation we will get higher inflation. I would say to people who are setting prices - please understand if we get inflation embedded, interest rates have to go up further and higher inflation benefits nobody."
The banking chief insisted he was not accusing firms of putting prices up more than necessary.
A Downing Street spokesman said it was for individual companies to make their own decisions about pricing.
Mr Bailey went on to claim the risk of recession had lessened in recent weeks after the Bank upgraded its forecast for the second quarter of the year.
It now expects Britain's gross domestic product to rise slightly.&nbsp;
