A BOY of 12 is seriously ill after being hit by lightning during a football tournament.
He was one of several people affected by the bolt as youngsters from several schools played in front of parents.
Ambulance chiefs sent five 999 vehicles and a chopper to The Sele School in Hertford - which was hosting the district tournament - after a storm hit.&nbsp;At the time, time, ambulance chiefs described his condition as "critical".
But police later said that he was in a "serious but stable condition" at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
A man in his 50s is also being treated at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex. The school's headteacher Chris Quach said on Facebook:&nbsp;"The entire staff of The Sele School, the wider school community and I would like to thank the emergency services and our first-aiders."
It came as thunderstorms, driving rain and strong winds hit central and south-east England. Lightning also struck a recycling plant in Yarnton, Oxon, causing a biogas tank to explode.
