BRITAIN'S biggest police force has been accused of wasting &pound;440,000 mounting certificates and picture frames.
The Met insists the spend is essential to boost morale and is a way to "recognise and reward" more than 44,000 officers.
It has advertised for companies to bid for a four-year contract to supply and deliver picture frames and certificates for its "employee recognition programme" The initiative recognises officers and staff for their bravery in the line of duty, long service and for those retiring.
But the move comes despite complaints by Met commissioner Sir Mark Rowley that the force is struggling financially.
It is in special measures after the Independent Office for Police Conduct watchdog highlighted concerns about the Met's performance following a series of scandals.
Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat policing spokeswoman at the London Assembly, said:
"Many Londoners will be questioning what appears to be an ill-judged use of public money.
"We all understand the value of recognising accomplishments within a workforce and its impact on morale and staff retainment.
"But that could easily be done via much less costly means".
The Met said it is not "committed" to spend the "maximum" &pound;440,000 and that costs are incurred only when picture frames are ordered.&nbsp;
