CONKERS enthusiasts have been rocked by a nut-freezing scandal.Players have been warned they will wreck the 200-yearold pastime when they compete with defrosted horse chestnuts at a top tournament this weekend.About 150 competitors at Conkerthon have been told they can slug it out with old frozen nuts after this year's crop was ruined by bad weather.But the decision has horrified aficionados of the traditional schoolyard game, which dates back to 1821.Lifelong player David Glew, 78, from Lincoln said using frozen horse chestnuts was "cheating, pure and simple".He added: "Conkersoftening means games are likely to be over in seconds.One of Britain's top tournaments is making them easier to smash."It's nuts and a low point in the honourable history of our sport."
