HOME cooks are being urged to enhance savoury dishes with Werther’s Originals. The owners of the butter toffee sweets – loved by grandparents – have launched a campaign to get people cooking with the candy. They say they are the perfect addition to recipes including sticky soy salmon stir fry and caramelised Korean beef with sticky rice. An advert placed in the BBC Good Food magazine claims you can use them to “add a hint of caramel sweetness to your savoury dishes”. It said: “Many of us love to indulge in a sweet treat from time to time, and they don’t come much more comforting than a Werther’s Original. Did you know you can also use them in your cooking? “If you need a little inspiration, you could start with this umami-rich stir fry or these beautifully crafted leek tarts.” Cooks are urged to grind them up to sprinkle into food. Other recipes include Vietnamese-style caramel pork and caramel and mustard chicken skewers.
