A GOLD rush is underway to find the wreckage of a ship along with its cargo of gems worth &pound; 4 billion.
Experts have launched a hunt for the remains of 17th-century English trading ship The Merchant Royal, which went down near the Isles of Scilly in 1641.
It was returning to Dartmouth, Devon, laden with treasure from Mexico, including at least 100,000lb of gold, 400 bars of silver and 500,000 pieces of eight.
In 2019, an anchor and cannon were dredged up by The Spirited Lady off the Cornish coast. Experts now believe the parts belonged to the Merchant Royal. Marine experts will start the treasure hunt next month.
