RUDE Gen Zers are killing off polite greetings including “hello” and “goodbye”. A massive 40% of those aged 12 to 27 – dubbed Generation Z – can’t be bothered with the traditional pleasantries. Meanwhile, phone users are disgusted by a rise in eating or chewing during calls and loud Dom Joly-style conversations on mobiles in public places, the study found. Joanna Knight, at business call handling provider Moneypenny, which did the research, said: “This survey backs up what we’ve been noticing during our call handling – young people are much less likely to say ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’. “We wonder if this is due to ‘telephobia’ among younger generations, who are less confident or practised in handling calls.” Moneypenny’s survey found 76% of us think answering or ending a call without a “hello” or “goodbye” is rude. But a whopping 40% of Gen Z said they found it totally acceptable. Almost half of Gen Zers also said they thought late-night phone calls are acceptable. Only 10% of over-55s shared their view. Overall, a massive 92% of Brits consider eating or chewing during a phone call “completely unacceptable”.
