Latest inflation data showed the Retail Prices Index (RPI) rate increased to 9.1% in August, up from 9% in July.
But the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rate fell marginally to 6.7% last month, down from 6.8% in July - the lowest rate since February last year.
Yet the Bank of England's own survey analysis suggests 45% of businesses are planning to raise their profit margins in the coming year.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "The threat of persistent inflation actually comes from firms boosting their profit margins.
"It's time for politicians to act against this profiteering and start taxing excess profits.
"This would put a finger in the eye of greedflation and provide real help for workers struggling through needless price hikes."&nbsp;
