They found that all could be classified into these groups: excitable/hyper-attached, anxious/ fearful, aloof/predatory, reactive/assertive or calm/agreeable.
Experts say the findings will help pair canines with the ideal owner and could keep kids safe.
It could see fewer animals abandoned as excitable pets could be matched to owners who
can handle them. Nearly half of people giving dogs to shelters say behavioural problems are a contributory factor and one in four cites them as the main reason.
Scientists also believe their&nbsp;study could be useful for selecting breeds suited to specialist roles, such as guide dogs or those used by the emergency services.
Dr Mohammad Amirhosseini, from the University of East London, said: "This innovative Al-based methodology holds promise for revolutionising the selection and training of dogs for specific roles, both working and non-working."
