AN emperor penguin has been on the species’ longest ever journey – after turning up in Australia. A group of surfers were speechless when they spotted the Antarctic native on the beach. Boffins believe the juvenile male swam more than 2,134 miles to reach Australia’s southern coast. Aaron Fowler, a surfer based at Ocean Beach in Denmark, which is around 267 miles south of Perth, said: “It was massive. It was way bigger than a sea bird. “We’re like, what is that thing coming out of the water? And it kind of had a tail sticking out like a duck. It stood up in the waves and just waddled straight up to us. “An emperor penguin, he was probably about a metre high and he was not shy at all. He looked absolutely flawless.” Experts think it is most likely to have come from one of more than 60 known emperor penguin colonies on the sea ice of eastern Antarctica. Dr Belinda Cannell, of the University of Western Australia, said: “The tracked ones have never reached this far.”
