Rich fabrics and fine textiles were seized from hundreds of churches closed by Henry VIII during the Reformation.
It came after the Church of England broke away from the authority of the Pope and the Catholic Church.
The fabrics were saved and repurposed via a recycling network which included government officials, merchants and craftsmen.
That saw church vestments, made of luxury Italian-imported fabrics, make their way into the homes of members of Tudor society.
Lead researcher James Clark said: "While they displayed great enthusiasm for new fashions, they also valued the craftsmanship of the past and, clearly, hated to see costly materials and quality craft wasted." The Textile Transmissions project is being conducted by the National Trust and Exeter University.
