ELEPHANTS have names for each other – just like people do, say boffins. Scientists found the pachyderms address each other with name-like calls – a rare ability among non-human animals. The team then called African elephants by their “names” – and the animals answered back. Researchers from Colorado State University in the US, along with conservation groups Save The Elephants and Elephant Voices, used AI to work out the names and played recordings back to them to see how they reacted. And they didn’t just copy the sounds like some other animals would. Study lead author Dr Michael Pardo, of CSU, said: “Dolphins and parrots call one another by ‘name’ by imitating the signature call of the addressee. “By contrast, elephants do not rely on imitation of the receiver’s calls to address one another.” Dr Kurt Fristrup said the findings suggest that “other kinds of labels or descriptors may exist in elephant calls”.
