But he can seek solace from the fact he could be about to join a title-winning team, as Ferrari eye glory following their US Grand Prix success.
Hamilton qualified 19th on Saturday and his race was over as soon as lap three, after he lost the rear end of his Mercedes and beached the car in a gravel trap.
But being a spectator, at a track where he has won five times, did afford him the chance to view the blistering performance of the team he will drive for next season.
