BOOZE consumption in Ireland has plummeted in two decades. Average intake in the nation known for its stouts and whiskeys is down almost a third and still falling, official data shows. Beer accounts for 42.9% of the market in Ireland, according to economist Anthony Foley of Dublin City University. His findings, published yesterday, show average per-adult alcohol consumption has declined by 31% since its 2001 peak. Total alcohol consumption increased by 0.9% in 2023 compared with 2022, but the amount drunk per person decreased. The report, commissioned by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland, shows average per-adult alcohol consumption decreased by 1.5% from 2022 to 2023. A DIGI spokesperson said: “The longterm decline in alcohol consumption over the past two decades indicates that Irish adults are enjoying beer, wine and spirits more moderately and differently.” Wine is second most popular at 28.3% of all 2023 consumption, with spirits at 22.6%. The DIGI wants a cut in alcohol tax.
