THE Archbishop of Canterbury is "deeply sorry" for his family's ancient links to slavery.The Most Rev Justin Welby, 68, admitted his great-great-great grandfather Sir James Fergusson owned slaves at the Rozelle Plantation in Jamaica.And his ancestor got the equivalent of £3million in compensation from the Government in 1836 after slavery had been abolished.The archbishop found the link while researching past of his biological father Sir Anthony Montague Browne.Mr Welby, who did not receive any the money from his father's estate since his death, said: "While I sadly only discovered my relationship to Sir Anthony in 2016, three years after his death, I had the delight of meeting my half-sister and her son."My trip to Jamaica has helped me to confront the legacies of enslavement and the responsibility owed to those who still suffer from the effects of this evil trade."The Church of England's most senior bishop added: "I can speak from my own heart. We are deeply sorry."
