SUPERMARKETS are fitting GPS track-ers to expensive cuts of meat such as lamb amid a shoplifting epidemic. Thieves have taken to supplying restaurants with stolen meat and fish from store shelves and it is then being served up to unwitting diners. Retailers are reporting that for every 100 legs of lamb sold, another eight go missing. Supermarkets have started fitting GPS trackers to pricey cuts to track crooks who steal them and are passing the information on to police. The trackers are put into pack-aging, which customers then get removed when they pay. Others are putting their meat and fish in locked security boxes. Retailers estimate fresh meat is accounting for a third of their "unknown losses". Chief Cons Amanda Blakeman, of the National Police Chiefs' Council, said thieves are not stealing meat for "a Sunday roast.. it's because they've got a market to sell it" Home Office figures show that 402,482 shoplifting offences were recorded in England and Wales over 12 months working out at more than 1,100 a day, or one offence every 78 seconds.
