SCHOOL summer holidays should be cut down with double-length half-terms, education boffins say.
Poverty and abuse can worsen during the end of school year break as hard-up families are pushed to the brink.
Under new proposals, summer holidays would be reduced from six weeks to four, while half-term breaks in autumn and winter would last for a fortnight. The report on post-Covid inequalities, to be published by Nuffield Foundation next month, says the radical idea would be a low-cost way of tackling divides.
Prof Lee Elliot Major, from the University penned of Exeter, who study, said: the "Spreading school holidays more evenly across the year makes complete educational sense.
"Reducing the summer holidays would still provide adequate time for teachers to recuperate and improve the wellbeing of pupils." Adding a week to the autumn half-term had drastic positive effects in one pilot.
Unity Schools Partnership, based in Suffolk, found pupil absences for illness plummeted by 25% and staff absences fell by a whopping 50% after it extended the half-term holiday.
