Dr Stefanie Gustafsson of Bath University, who interviewed 50 lawyers at various stages of their careers, said workers often "write off" family and social lives to focus on jobs. And by the time they reach the final stage, many felt "disillusioned".
Dr Gustafsson believes the findings could apply to any top careers.
