CRIMINALS on probation are committing at least one violent crime – including murder or sexual assault – every 30 hours. Ministry of Justice data showed 3,540 serious offences were carried out by criminals released on probation between 2010 and 2022. They included 762 murders, 220 attempted murders and over 1,000 serious sexual crimes including rape, sexual assault and rape of children under 13. During the 12-year period it works out as one offence every 30 hours. Inspection reports have indicated a shortage of probation officers is to blame. It comes after a string of high profile cases where three offenders on probation murdered nine people including three children, with inspectors blaming failings by the probation service. The annual report from Martin Jones, chief inspector of probation, found “assessments of the risk of harm people on probation pose remain inaccurate and incomplete”. It added: “It is clear that reduced staffing levels within local services continue to have an impact on the quality of work we are seeing.”
