EXPERTS have admitted they don’t know why deadly “sloth fever” is spreading across Europe. Twelve imported cases of the Oropouche virus have been recorded in Spain since June. Five cases were detected in Italy and two more in Germany. The bug, which originates in sloths, is mainly spread through the bite of infected midges and mosquitoes. The Centre for Disease Control in the US has issued a warning after 8,000 cases – including six deaths – were found in South America and the Caribbean this year. The symptoms include a rash, headache and joint pain. Those affected will typically experience a fever three to eight days after catching it. Experts are baffled as to the cause of the spike in the disease, which has no vaccine. Dr Tulio de Oliveira, the director for the Centre of Epidemic Response and Innovation at Stellenbosch University in Souh Africa, said: “We do not know (why this is happening) but what we do know is that many of these pathogens cause the worst clinical outcomes when they come in succession.”
