SOME of Britain's biggest supermarkets have agreed to use controversial facial recognition cameras to crack down on shoplifting.
The &pound;600,000 scheme, Project Pegasus, will see police officers run through CCTV of shoplifters provided by stores and check them against faces of suspects on the Police National Database.
Officers said it was a gamechanger as it will give them a UK- wide picture of where shoplifting gangs operate. However, critics including Big Brother Watch said creating a "faceprint" of people passing in front of cameras was "a threat to our privacy and free-doms". Facial recognition has been used by South Wales and London's Metropolitan police forces during large-scale events.
This is despite Court of Appeal judges ruling that trials of the&nbsp;technology were unlawful in 2020. John Lewis, Co-op, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Next are among those funding Pegasus.
Shoplifting has soared by a quarter this year, with police accused of failing to tackle the crime.
Police minister Chris Philp asked forces to draw up a target list of shoplifters, and said: "Shoplifting is not a minor offence. If you don't hit it hard, it escalates."&nbsp;
