Tesco is already testing the no-scan cash registers, which use sensors and cameras to calculate what's in a shopping basket.
Groceries appear on a screen immediately, with no need to fumble for barcodes. Punters can even pack their bags as they shop and pay without getting anything out again.
Tesco's Sarah Quiggin said: "Customers understandably get frustrated with 'unexpected item in the bagging area' alerts.
"With no-scan tills you turn up to the checkout and you pay." The system relies on cameras mounted in the supermarket's ceiling. Almost 70 watch for products being picked up in each aisle, while weight sensors are also installed on the shelves.
