MANY "qualified" cosmetic surgeons are ineligible to work as one in the NHS, says a leading doctor.
Maniram Ragbir, of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, said regulating the industry is "an absolute nightmare".
He said anyone considering going under the knife should check their surgeon is actually registered as a cosmetic surgeon with the General Medical Council.
The consultant said: "I would be willing to bet that a significant proportion, if not more than 50% of people who are claiming to be cosmetic surgeons, will not be on a specialist register or would be ineligible for a job in the NHS."
The specialist added he was concerned about the number of "schools" and "colleges" springing up that offer to teach surgical and nonsurgical procedures. He is calling for more help to let people find out what their surgeon's qualifications are.
Researcher Marimo of University Rossiter, College London, said: "We found that a lot of organisations are not checking they have registered practitioners that are qualified".
