TRAGIC mum Nicola Bulley died from drowning when she went missing from a river bank, an inquest was told yesterday.
The mortgage adviser, 45, was alive when she hit the icy 3C water in January, but could have been killed in just 25 seconds.
Professor Michael Tipton told the hearing a typical response to plunging into a river where the temperature was 10C or below was to "gasp" and inhale one or two litres of water.
He said: "It would only take one or two breaths to cross the lethal dose for drowning!" Home Office pathologist Alison Armour said the evidence of water in Nicola's lungs and stomach led her to conclude the cause of death was drowning.
Nicola had not been drinking and there was no sign of foul play or an attack by a third party, Dr James Adeley, senior coroner for Lancashire, was told.
Nicola had taken her two daughters to school and was walking her dog Willow on January 27 when she went missing. Willow and her mobile phone were found near a bench on the bank of the River Wyre at St Michael's on Wyre, Lancs.
Her body was found in the water on February 19 about a mile away after a huge search operation.
The hearing at County Hall in Preston continues.
