MOTORISTS are being driven round the bend by damage caused by potholes as payouts from skint councils dry up.
Car owners are being forced to turn to insurers to cover the&nbsp;cost of repairs - pushing premiums to record levels.
From 2019-23, funds paid to drivers for pothole damage plunged from &pound;3.7million to &pound;1.7m across 85 councils. This&nbsp;is despite the number of claims rising 70% between 2021 and 2023.
Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "We've had the most pothole-related damage for the last five years.
"Councils have tightened up the criteria whereby they give out compensation.
"We've seen a massive increase in incidents on the roads.
"Drivers are damaging two wheels, two tyres, and steering, which could be &pound;5,000." The Local Government Association said: "Each claim for compensation is robustly judged on its own merits and in accordance to the law."&nbsp;
