The Black Cats boss is hoping Stewart (left), mired in contract talks with his deal up next June, will commit long-term because he can be a fans’ hero.

Last season Sunderland only faltered in the play-off semi-final against Luton, after a remarkable season blighted by injury but lit up by stylish forward play. Stewart was sidelined for most of the campaign but netted 10 goals in 13 Championship appearances when fit. And his return, pencilled in for next month, will be key to another promotion bid.
