A FARMER reckons he has reared climate-friendly cows that fart less.
Ben Loewith is one of the first in the world to breed cattle that produce lower amounts of methane - the potent greenhouse gas that speeds up climate change.
His heifers were impregnated with new-to-market bull semen that had been genetically modified to produce less windy animals.
Ben said: "We can make some simple changes over the next 20 to 30 years that reduce our carbon footprint by 30%. You can selectively breed animals that can produce less methane than their peers.

"It's only 1.25% to 1.5% but the thing about selective breeding is that there is a cumulative effect.
"Every generation that you continue to select for the trait, you'll end up with animals that are producing less methane." Ben, whose farm is in Lynden, Ontario, Canada, added: "Selectively breeding for lower emissions, as long as we're not sacrificing other traits, seems like an easy win."
