THE mystery of how the Egyptian pyramids came to be may finally have been cracked.
For centuries the question has baffled historians, as the Great Pyramid alone is made up of 2.3million blocks each weighing around two tonnes.
Without modern technology like cranes, experts were left scratching their heads over how huge slabs were transported and stacked.
But archaeologists believe they may now have solved the puzzle, as they think the Egyptians used a now-defunct waterway from the River Nile to transport giant rocks to Giza. Analysis of fossilised soil samples from the Giza floodplain found the existence of the Khufu Branch tributary, which dried up around 600BC - about 2,000 years after the pyramids were built.
Environmental geographer Hader Sheisha said: "I was so interested because this confirms the transport of the pyramid's building materials were moved over water."
She added it would have been "impossible" to build the impressive ancient structures without the tributary.
