RISHI Sunak is considering a 5% pay rise for public sector staff to end strikes by nurses and other workers.
The PM is weighing up the move after the Treasury was given an unexpected &pound;30 billion windfall.
Mr Sunak's allies say he wanted to take decisive action to bring the wave of strike action to a close.
The move follows figures showing public sector borrowing was likely to be &pound;30bn lower than estimated due to a fall in energy prices and high tax receipts. And awards of up to 5% for 2023-24 have a "low risk" of setting a benchmark for private sector wage growth, a private Treasury memo says.
The PM said he was "grateful" to nursing union bosses for entering into talks and calling off their NHS strikes next week.
He added: "I'm very pleased that the Government is in intensive talks with the Royal College of Nursing to find a way forward."
