THE Irish dancing community has been compared to "the Mafia" in a bombshell investigation about a cheating scandal.
Witnesses have allegedly been too scared to speak out publicly because of its "oppressive" nature.
Teachers and judges have been accused of bribing each other with sex in exchange for podium places for young dancers.
A probe was launched by the Irish dancing governing body, An Coimisi&uacute;n Le Rinc&iacute; Gaelacha, after the allegations were made last year. Experts told BBC documentary The Year That Rocked Irish Dancing that parents were too frightened to discuss the goings-on openly.
They likened them to people too scared to talk about the Mafia, which has an "omerta" code of silence about crimes.
Journalist Ellen Coyne said: "The first day I was working on the story I was on the phone to somebody who compared it to the Mafia. I have never worked on a story where so many people have refused to go on the record."&nbsp;
