SpaceX's giant Starship blasted off from the southern tip of Texas on its first test flight yesterday.
But it exploded minutes after rising from the launch pad and its wreckage crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.
"Starship just experienced what we call a 'rapid unplanned disassembly," an official said on the live broadcast.
The SpaceX team later tweeted: "With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today's test will help us improve Starship's reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multi-planetary."
Tesla boss Musk, who warned that the 400ft rocket - the most powerful ever built - could blow up, tweeted his congratulations to staff. It carried no people or satellites.
