CONKER players competing in the World Championship may have to bake their nuts after wet weather left them too soft to play with.
Sport chiefs admitted allowing participants to harden their conkers in the oven before battles was controversial - and has previously been thought of as cheating.
But they said it may be the only way to guarantee world-class action as a bizarre mix of freezes, heatwaves and washouts in the past year had left chestnuts too squidgy to duel with.
It means they may plan to harden up 3,000 conkers in ovens for the 200 players taking part in Sunday's tournament at Southwick, Northants.
Conker fight fans branded the move bonkers.
David Glew, 77, from Lincoln, said: "Baking conkers in the oven just wouldn't be right. It's nuts.
The sport is in crisis." But tournament spokesman St John Burkett said: "This is the biggest crisis in our history. The conkers are just too soft and mushy.&nbsp;
People will say it's controversial. But it looks like the nuts could otherwise be too soft to have a tournament.
"They would just fall apart when hit.
"We've never had to revert to baking conkers before.
"But we've never had conkers this soft before."
