POLICE have begged people not to tackle Just Stop Oil Tarquins after revealing their protests have cost taxpayers &pound;4.5 million recently.
The eco-warriors' 156 slow marches have soaked up the equivalent of 13,770 police shifts over the past six weeks.
Officers made 86 arrests, resulting in 49 criminal charges, after being diverted from other duties to control the sixdays-a-week demonstrations.
The new outlay comes on top of &pound;7.5m spent by the Met Police tackling the demonstrators over three months last year.
That brings the total cost of policing the activists&nbsp;to &pound;12m since October. Met deputy assistant commissioner Ade Adelekan said: "Just Stop Oil's intent has been clear on disrupting road users. We would urge the public not to intervene or take matters into their own hands but to call police."

Police issued Section 12 orders to disperse the demonstrators under the Public Order Act 1986 and removed 65 from the roads within minutes.
