THE National Trust plans to install "wee poles" for dogs to piddle on to stop historic buildings and trees being ruined.
A "small handful of sites" will have 3ft wooden posts put up in their grounds as part of a trial.
The Trust says high amounts of dog urine can increase the acidity of the soil and affect plants and the surrounding environment.
The poles are being trialled at Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire and Attingham Park in Shropshire.
The organisation has been under pressure from nearly half of members to allow pets to roam free in and around its properties.
Currently, other than assistance dogs, pooches are banned from entering nearly all historic houses.
Project manager Ceinwen Paynton said: "We are currently looking at a range of solutions to help balance access for dogs with measures to look after the environment.
"Wee poles' are one example. We plan to trial them at a small handful of sites.
Other experiments being tested out include dog washes, dog trailers, dog fields and dog-friendly trails, the charity said.
