POPE Francis has apologised after he "stunned" Vatican bishops by appearing to make an offensive homophobic slur.
In a behind-closed-doors meeting the Pope, 87, suggested that gay men should not be allowed to train as priests because there is already "too much f*****ry".
Bishops were taken aback by his use of the vulgar Italaian word "frociaggine", which loosely translates to "f*****ry" The remark was met with "incredulous laughter" with one bishop suggesting the Pontiff "did not know" how offensive the word is as Italian is his second language.
But ex-priest Francesco Lepore, now a gay rights activist, said he was "stunned".
He added: "Speaking of 'f*****ry' in the seminaries seems more like a bar and a tavern than a pontiff."
The Vatican has apologised for the Pope's language. A statement said: "The Pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he apologises to those who felt offended by the use of a term reported by others."&nbsp;
