BRITAIN has lost 4,000 Indian restaurants as diners turn their backs on old-fashioned curry houses.
The rise in popularity of Indian street food eateries and pop-ups mean that the traditional Indian is under threat.
The famous Balti Triangle in Birmingham now has just four restaurants where dozens once flourished.
It is estimated that in 2011, the nation had 12,000 curry houses and now that figure stands at 8,000.
Aktar Islam, founder of Michelin-starred restaurant, Opheem, said: "I have been quite vocal about this for years, telling the curry hospitality industry that they need to adapt and change and evolve. There was a massive explosion of what we now refer to as British curry which was inspired by cuisine from the Indian subcontinent.
"But in reality it had very little resemblance to its counterpart in India."
He said the increasing popularity of Indian street food restaurants reflects diners who want a more authentic experience.
"This new breed of Indian street food is closer to the real thing, and people appreciate provenance and authenticity," said Aktar. "The flavours are sharper and punchier."
Staffing shortages plus high food and energy prices are also causing problems.
