Pet lovers hit by the cost-of-living crisis have tried to save on vet bills by dodging de-sexing surgery leaving more than a million randy cats free to roam and romp.
It means rescue centres are stretched to breaking point.
Jo Underwood, 49, Peterborough Cat Rescue said: "It's getting worse and worse each of year. Unneutered male cats are fighting, spreading disease and costing cat owners more money.
"It is also mating season so we get daily calls about cats being found with kittens." The RSPCA estimates there are 10 million cats in the UK.
The proportion neutered every year fell to 86% in 2020 - and is expected have plummeted further during and after the pandemic.
The RSPCA's cat welfare expert Samantha Watson warned: "We could have a cat breeding explosion on our hands. We would urge owners to please get their cats neutered from four months old before they can get pregnant."
Cats Protection urged owners to keep moggies indoors with plenty to entertain them such as toys and scratching posts - until they can be snipped or spayed.
