A clinical trial with 24 heavy snorers is underway to see if wearing them during the day reduces the amount of fluid that builds up in the lower legs.
The thinking is that when people lie down, the fluid rises to the neck - known as "rostral shift" - which raises the risk of sleep apnoea.
The &pound;14 socks compress the lower leg to stop the build-up of fluid in the first place. Sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley said flight sock therapy looked promising though it may only reduce the severity of the condition rather than stop it.
He said: "Treatment should be about reducing it to as close to zero as possible." Previous research claimed men with severe sleep apnoea who wore compression socks every day for two weeks saw night-time awakenings halved and fluid build-up around their necks reduced.
The year-long flight sock trial is underway in PitieSalpetriere University Hospital in Paris, France.
The two dozen men will wear them daily for a month then leave them off for four weeks.
